Step 1: Download Ledger Live Safely
Always use the official Ledger website. Verify HTTPS and, if possible, validate the checksum to ensure authenticity. Desktop versions are recommended for initial setup; mobile apps are suitable for routine monitoring.
Verification protects you: Avoid tampered software that could compromise your device or recovery phrase.
Step 2: Install & Launch
Follow platform instructions carefully. On macOS, allow the app via Security & Privacy settings. Linux users may need proper USB permissions. Upon first launch, select “Initialize as new device” or “Restore device” as appropriate.
Never type your recovery phrase into a computer — input it only on your Ledger device during official restore.
Step 3: Connect Device
Use the original USB cable and connect directly to the computer. Unlock using the device’s PIN. Never share the recovery phrase with Ledger Live or any other software.
Alert: Requests for recovery phrases outside device restore flows are scams. Stop immediately and verify through official channels.
Step 4: App Profiles & Security
Ledger Live uses local profiles and optional app passwords. These passwords protect local settings but do not replace device PINs or recovery phrases. Always keep backups in a secure manager.
Step 5: Verify On Device
Device screen is the final authority. Always confirm addresses, amounts, and transaction details directly on the Ledger before approving.
Important: Cancel immediately if discrepancies appear between app and device.
Step 6: PIN & Passphrase
Choose a strong, memorable PIN. Consider optional passphrases for hidden wallets — remember, losing a passphrase means losing access permanently.
Step 7: Backup Recovery Phrase
Write your 12/24-word recovery phrase on the official card or a secure metal backup. Store offline in multiple secure locations if possible.
Never store recovery words digitally.
Step 8: Test Transactions
Always conduct small test transfers for new addresses or services to ensure smooth operations before large transfers.
Step 9: Daily Security Practices
- Confirm all transaction details on-device before signing.
- Keep Ledger Live and device firmware up-to-date.
- Use small test transactions for new services.
- Consider dedicated hardware for large operations.
